“What on earth is THAT?” my friend asked as she climbed into the van. I looked to where she was pointing; realizing that a pile of dead leaves in the console had caught her eye. I had to remind myself that not every person has a pile of dead leaves in their console. “That, my friend, is my treasure! Some Mamas get flowers, I get leaves,” I explained.

My daughter, Claire, loves to collect leaves. Fall is her favorite time of year...our walks to the park take an extra 15-20 minutes because of all the leaves she has to stop and pick up. She beams as she hands them to me and says "don't throw them away, ok Mama?"

Claire's fascination used to be with rocks. Not a week went by where I didn't pick out a rock from the dryer -clean as can be- long forgotten in the her pockets.
I used to be perplexed and even annoyed by these habits. Now, when I look at those rocks or dead leaves, I remember that my children love me without condition. Their love is indescribable, overwhelming and so intense it brings me humbly to tears. Claire recently reassured me of her unconditional love when she said, “I love you, Mommy, even when you are mean and tell me no.”

The rocks and dead leaves have even began to represent something else to me. I am but a common object, and at times, I feel quite useless–like just another leaf in the pile. But, where the world might see “just a leaf,” the Lord sees a treasure. To him, I am as beautiful as the most exquisite rose – worthy of being placed on a shelf for all the world to see.
