While at the park, I noticed a little girl on the monkey bars who was trying to show her mom that she could finally make it across. Every time her mom would come over to watch her, she would lose her grip before making it all the way. "Can I have a do over?" she asked. To this her mom laughed and said "sure, we have a few more minutes".
Do overs. I like that concept. I like it a lot.
So much of my life has been about making it further ahead just so that I can impress others. Hanging on for dear life to the things I've achieved or accumulated, reaching for the next silly goal until I lose my grip and come tumbling down. Once I'm done pouting and thinking how unfair it is, I usually realize that it was a blessing....God is giving me a do over. Funny how It never seems to happen when I actually WANT a do over...
Like the time our neighbor brought us over some tomatoes from her garden and I didn't hear my husband announce her arrival. Having just gotten out of the shower and happening upon her in our living room, I would have done ANYTHING for a do over.
Or last month when we were leaving a restaurant and buckling our kids into their seats...I went to lift my soon to be four year old into her car seat and with my head sticking up over the car, eyes closed I grunted "you're so heavy!" only to open my eyes and see a rather large lady walking by (giving me a dirty look). I would have loved to have a do over then too.
But thankfully God knows what we really need. Thats the amazing thing about being a mom with him by my side. He gives me lots of do overs. Every day is a new day. Theres always another chance. His forgiveness of my mistakes flows freely. All I have to do is believe it and do it over.....
In 2 Corinthians 5:17 Paul says "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old has gone, the new has come!" At first glance it seems naive and simplistic...but to the ears of a mom much in need of daily do overs, it's a message of hope and help. God doesn't just give us do overs. He goes even further and gives us make overs. He integrates the opportunity for what we do to arise up out of who we are- differently today from yesterday and tomorrow from today.
God gives us lots of do overs because he's in the business of make overs. And I need them both, over and over again.
