Day 1
Psalms 1; 19:7-14; 37; 112; 128
Clarke on 112:
This is another of the acrostic or alphabetical Psalms, under the title Hallelujah. It is formed exactly as the preceding in the division of its verses. It has ten verses in the whole: the first eight contain each two hemistichs, beginning with a consecutive letter of the alphabet; the ninth and tenth verses, three each, making twenty-two in the whole. It is understood to have been written after the captivity, and probably by Zechariah and Haggai: to them it is ascribed by the Vulgate.
Day 2
Proverbs 1 – 6
Assuming that the Bible will not encourage us to Idolatry, I think that it's prudent to point out that the wisdom spoken of in these verses simply cannot be worldly wisdom. Consider, for example, how wrongly chapter 4 can be taken.
5 Get wisdom, get understanding; forget [it] not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her, and she shall keep thee. 7 Wisdom [is] the principal thing, [therefore] get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. 8 Grow in [wisdom], and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honour when thou hast embraced her. 9 She shall give to thine head an increase of grace; a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
Even with the caveat that the wisdom and insight spoken of here is of and about God, this verse may still be a slippery slope. Wisdom itself will not deliver you, even the most saintly wisdom one could acquire. God will deliver you, and seeking that from anything else is idolatry.
Day 3
Proverbs 10 – 17
Scofield gives us a good lesson at the opening of 10:
A "fool" in Scripture is never a mentally deficient person, but rather one arrogant and self-sufficient; one who orders his life as if there were no God. See, for illustration, Luke 12:16-20. The rich man was not mentally deficient, but he was a "fool" because he supposed that his soul could live on the things in the barn, giving no thought to his eternal wellbeing.
Day 4
Proverbs 20 – 25; 31
20:13 struck me
Do not love sleep lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
I do love sleep.
Day 5
Ezra 1; 3; 4:1-5; 5-7
Day 6
Nehemiah 8 – 9:5; 10:28 – 39
No time for day 5 & 6 this week. Read them but no commentary. |
